Hiranyakashipu enlisted the help of his sister, Holika, who had a special cloak that protected her from fire, to kill Prahlad. Holika sat on a pyre with Prahlad in her lap, intending to burn him alive while she remained unharmed.
But divine intervention occurred: Vishnu’s protection extended to Prahlad, and the cloak shifted from Holika to him, allowing Prahlad to emerge unscathed while Holika perished in the flames.
This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil, righteousness over arrogance, and devotion over malice. The burning of Holika is commemorated on the eve of Holi with bonfires, known as Holika Dahan.
The next day, people celebrate Holi by smearing each other with colored powders and spraying colored water, reenacting the playful antics of Lord Krishna, another avatar of Vishnu, who was known for drenching the village girls with colored water during his youth.
